God’s Own Cow Country

Cherry County is nicknamed, God’s Own Cow Country. In 2024 the population density of Cherry County was less than one person per square mile. It is the largest county in Nebraska.The broader region the county sits within is called the Sandhills. It is the most intact natural habitat across the Great Plains.

In the sea of Nebraska’s cornfields, the Sandhills stick out. There is no corn, nor combines. It is a dense yet vacuous place.
