From the Mountain I See

It's hard to understand how Montevideo, my hometown, was named. It comes from a Latin phrase roughly meaning From the Mountain I see. It sits at the confluence of the Minnesota and Chippewa Rivers in the Minnesota River Valley. There are no mountains. Generously, there are occasional rolling hills. The region is so flat, people joke that you can watch your dog run away for miles. Perhaps this is what Montevideo’s founders were reflecting on, like from a peak the sky is large.
